Dear Praying
Family,
A magnitude 8.0 earthquake hit Peru about 150 miles
south of Lima on August 15. Hundreds lost their lives
and many thousands lost their homes. Churches from
Lima have responded with immediate relief aid including
water, food and blankets. The urgency of providing
basic necessities is passing as most of the affected
area returns to semi-normal. Stores and markets are
gradually reopening and electricity and water have
been restored in many areas. However, the need to rebuild
damaged and collapsed homes and churches remains. Families
who lost their homes are still living on the street,
in crowded conditions with neighbors or relatives,
or in temporary shacks.
We just returned from a second trip south, this time
with a group from our church in Lima. We worked on
clean up and demolition at our camp near Pisco. The
reconstruction effort will take many months and requires
substantial resources. It has been very encouraging
to see the efforts of other Peruvian churches in helping
their brothers in the earthquake zone. You can help
as well! We are still working on assessing the damage
and formulating a project to rebuild the affected churches
and homes. We were in Ica again yesterday meeting with
pastors and those believers who lost their homes. You
should receive a report with pictures and specific
proposals this week. Until then, please visit www.abwe.org or contact ABWE (717) 774-7000 if you would like to
contribute to rebuilding churches and providing new,
earthquake resistant modular homes for Christians who
lost theirs in the earthquake.
In His Hands,
Jonathan, Angela, and Alison Stone
P.S. Alison got her first tooth today! And she started
crawling last week! :-) |
